A qualified practitioner conducts a comprehensive intake assessment, identifying constitutional patterns according to both classical diagnostic frameworks (tongue morphology, pulse qualities, palpation) and biomedical history. Needles of varying gauge (typically 0.16–0.30 mm diameter) are inserted to depths ranging from a few millimetres to several centimetres, depending on the targeted tissue layer and clinical indication.
Treatment protocols may incorporate adjunctive techniques including moxibustion (thermal stimulation via Artemisia combustion), electroacupuncture (application of pulsed electrical current), or auriculotherapy. Sessions typically last 30–60 minutes, with courses often spanning 4–10 treatments for chronic presentations.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in JAMA Internal Medicine, The Lancet, and Pain have demonstrated statistically significant benefits for acupuncture across several conditions, including chronic musculoskeletal pain, tension headache, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and dysmenorrhoea. Fire cupping involves briefly introducing a flame into a glass cup to displace oxygen before placing it on the skin, creating a sustained vacuum. Research from Harvard Medical School demonstrated HO-1 expression persisting up to 72 hours post-treatment. Gua sha is indicated for acute and chronic pain, febrile conditions, and myofascial restriction.
Tui Na is a form of Chinese therapeutic massage and manual manipulation that forms an integral component of Traditional Chinese Medicine alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine. Practitioners apply a range of techniques — including rolling (gun fa), pressing (an fa), kneading (rou fa), and joint mobilisation — to specific acupoints, meridian channels, and musculoskeletal structures. Tui Na promotes the free flow of qi and blood, relaxes sinew and fascia, and addresses both structural and energetic imbalances. It is particularly effective as a complement to acupuncture for orthopaedic conditions, cervical and lumbar pain, and paediatric presentations.

A triad of traditional East Asian therapeutic techniques — facial acupuncture, cupping therapy, and gua sha — has attracted significant academic interest as non-invasive approaches to facial tissue health. While originally developed within classical medical systems, contemporary investigations have begun to elucidate their physiological mechanisms.
The insertion of fine needles into the dermis and superficial musculature of the face stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis via fibroblast activation, increases local microcirculation, and may modulate matrix metalloproteinases involved in tissue remodelling. Yasmin Malik is an integrative wellness practitioner whose academic journey spans over a decade of rigorous biomedical science and clinical complementary training. She began with a Bachelor of Science grounded in biochemistry and physiology, before specialising in neuroscience at postgraduate level — completing both an Honours degree and a Master of Medical Science in Physiology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the latter awarded cum laude.
This deep understanding of how the brain, nervous system, and body communicate underpins everything she does. She went on to qualify clinically at the University of Johannesburg in Complementary Medicine — training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, nutrition, and Western herbal medicine — and is currently furthering her expertise through a Diploma in Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy at the College of Naturopathic Medicine, with a focus on herbal medicine and naturopathic nutrition.
